We"d been given advice by my sister in law Rita on how to get out of Honiton and after our advised narrow lane went from 10 to 15 to 25 % we thought she must have had it in for us as we sweated litres mainly pushing our bikes up to the plateau.
Rita had in fact cycled up to the plateau from another route staying to see us off which was great and when we queried the steepness of the lane she replied that the other route was even steeper !!!!
Cycling across the plateau revealed a WW2 airfield used by US forces for the Normandy landings and sadly now mainly used as a farmers refuse field.
The beauty of having cycled UK end to end on 2 previous occasions meant that I could use previous learning in seeking out a route that comprised scenery yet published where possible traffic in this well populated island !
We cycled a section of the Taunton - Bridgewater canal before taking roads towards Glastonbury and then Wells as we entered Somerset approaching
the Mendip hills !
We took in a roadside sausage and egg bun along our way and a couple of cans of Pepsi. Talking to the business operator he highlighted last years floods as preventing him from opening in this section of the road for 3 months after persistent rain and there isn't even a river around !
Photos shown by a mate of his revealed the area to be at leat 3-4 feet under water with the UK having one of its wettest periods on record (how 12 months can change things !)
Worryingly enroute H started to complain of the "peeing razor blade symptons" again making me think his infection has not properly healed.
We had a unique problem approaching Wells in that I could not remember the name of our b& b and had no access to the Internet - amazingly the first lace we tried in the general area turned out incredibly to be ours !
Dinner was a great Lasagne in a village down the road most definitely worth the walk.
Tomorrow we hope to cross into Wales and no doubt there will be some tough Kms ahead !
Picture 1: is it a cycling or walking tour? Maybe, both?? Good to see that you are enjoying English tucker: sausage and egg bun. How does it compare with baguette and cheese? The beer looks good and in a proper sized glass.
ReplyDeleteThe weather is Melb is still holding out - about 18 today and no rain.

Hi you 2, know what you're talking about with the weather, much the same over this side of the channel in Normandy. I'm not doing quite as much exercise as you but I think I'm probably eating as much with the inevitable consequences. Only got about a week of our holiday to go and then back to cold (cool?) Melbourne.
ReplyDeleteHope the razor blades get a little blunter, Kev.
Cheers,

Hi guys, hope you are coping ok with the pommy heat. Temp here is 18C which isn't too bad for this time of year. Weekend expected to plummet back to wintery conditions. You had better get H drinking more water and get him off the PM. Either that or he's picked up a dose of the clap from somewhere???? Say hello to the Joneses in Wales for me. There's only a couple of them. Enjoy and take care you two.
