Day 66 - Santander - Bay of Biscay ! Kev takes ambulance to ferry !

A day that started off great, had a narrow close call and then so nearly ended in disaster !

We took a late ly in being our last day in Europe with Kev catching up on emails while I took in a final swim at the beautiful Sandiero beach.

With still the best part of a days car hire left we journeyed towards Bilbao along the magnificent coastline (stunning beaches) to Castro Urdiales a lovely town with a series of natural beaches and harbors.

On first impression CU could have resembled an Australian Qld beach front with its apartment blocks but close up the place had a lot to offer, quiet beaches with numerous nubiles and a lovely old section with cathedral like church perched dramatically on a cliff frontage.

The trip back to our car hire depot at Santander airport though was not without some drama with our fuel gauge reading empty with 25kmsto go !

Faced with the choice of being hot with the AC off or walking along a freeway out of fuel with no emergency phone or servo nearby H chose the latter believing that comfort was more important !

We arrived back on fumes, kissed the ground then took a bite to eat at the airport before getting a lesson in Spanish driving from our taxi driver as we hurtled back to our hotel - apparently posted speed limits are meant to be doubled and striking pedestrians must carry licence bonus points in Spain !

Back at hotel we took an hour to relax before cycling to the ferry although H by this time was indicating that he was starting to feel unwell.

The 5 km ride to the ferry took us smack bang through the busy central part of Santander and it was here that disaster struck.

Just having rounded a busy roundabout a passing driver yelled something Spanish at me - all I could interpret was something about my compradre !

Quickly going back to the last round about I found Kev lying on the ground with a crowd of helpers around and some evident cuts on his legs and arms.

I assumed the worst fearing he'd been involved in a collision but Kev indicated to me that he'd been feeling dizzy approaching the round about and lost control striking an edge and thankfully falling on a grass verge rather than in the round about itself.

The fall though was heavy enough to cause a significant impact resulting in locals attending as well as an ambulance.

While not badly injured Kev was obviously not well throwing up !

The ambulance took Kev directly to the ferry only 200 meters away while a local walked Kevs bike ( thanks to Gabriel) Staff at Brittany ferries were also fantastic arranging for early boarding and attendance of the ships nurse who worryingly suggested that Kev may not be allowed to board and may be taken to hospital ( a logistical drama with the ferry only going 1-2 times a week from Santander)

Kev though started to come well and was allowed on board where I helped put him to bed where he has remained for the last 12 hours !

PS - He awoke feeling better this morning but I'm still concerned at what caused the event given this is the 3rd time on your he has suffered an event

Thankfully this time the storey is a good one!
