Sorry .........
Our day usually starts with me having to prise open H`s eyelids with a crow bar to see if he is still alive not because of his previous days effort but his fastidious habit of not wanting to go to bed before midnight no matter how tired he his !
H proceeds to eat breakfast like there is no tommorow while I usually delay procedings trying to find one thing or another.
Our gear is chosen using the scientifically proven smell test visually confirmed by whether such article is capable of standing by itself or not !
Once on road most is forgotten as we take in the beautiful scenery ... that is until drenched by a passing car. We consider layering up because of the Weather but it makes little difference as layering induces sweating making you just as wet !
The cycling is theoretically enjoyable if all is working well - often not , we`re not getting lost - often not, the traffic is minimal - often not !
Cycling is a great way to internalize - often considering life's imponderables and then realizing with clarity that you've only completed .5 of a km since you last checked !
En route we try to take in as much as is possible both scenery, history and culture even though by days end we both struggle to recall any of the towns we`ve cycled through !
One of our biggest challenges is somehow age related, H reckons I mumble when talking (has been said once or twice before) and I reckon H is 10 years overdue for a hearing test - a couple of examples -
When crossing a bridge in Belgium I indicated to H that when on the other side we`d stop so I could check the GPS - H nodded affirmation then rode over the bridge and kept going disappearing into the distance,. When he finally returned i asked him why he kept going he said he couldn't understand what I'd said .. I asked him why he had then nodded he said it was simply easier to agree !
Yesterday when leaving Verdun I indicated to H that we`d leave by the `Liddl street (an Aldi type store that wed been to the day before) he looked perplexed until he finally said .. what little street in town do you mean !!"
Most immediate battles include keeping on track, thank god for the GPS, finding somewhere to eat in France (not so simple) and at the end of a tiring day trying to find a hotel with a room and beds that passes H`s stringent quality checks.
We then sit down discuss all the days problems and gripes and with an almost masochistic pleasure indicate how much we look forward to doing it all over again tomorrow !
