Day 13 - Nittel on the Moselle - Germany 69 kms Henley gets the wobbles !

After yesterdays rain and with our gear still drying we decided to sleep in a little with the day also promising much the same thing.

When H finally got up he nearly nose dived straight into the carpet apparently an inner ear problem he's had on and off over the years.

Holding his hand (confirming the receptionists opinion) I took him to breakfast and in a move sure to win me many brownie points, acted as his personal waiter only occasionally saying `yessum boss` to his culinary requests.

Taking advantage of the hotels late checkout H had a rest for an hour to improve his condition delaying our departure to nearly midday.

Once again we donned our full wet weather gear although H`s washed gloves were still casting an overpowering smell.

We took the bike path from Thionville along the Moselle with H careful not to ride too close to the river in case he overbalanced and fell in (I would have saved his camera !)

All was going well until a detour threw us off track getting us lost in Cattenom home to one of the largest nuclear reactors in France.
Even the GPS was temporarily out of action with moisture causing problems - but once dry and with directions we were soon back on track.

With the rain finally slowing our mood improved as did H`s well being - well at least a little !

We crossed into Germany at Schengen with little fanfare (no signs) getting momentarily lost and ending up in Luxembourg - another country added to our list !

The cycling scenery began to slowly change with the hills giving to steeply sided vineyards that have decorated this area since the 2nd century when introduced by the Romans to supply their troops.

We finally called it a day at the pretty German village of Nittel where ever 2nd house appears to be either a restaurant or a wine cellar !

The receptionist was pretty damned impressed when H told her we had checked all thru Holland, Belgium and France in only 2 weeks !

Feeling hungry (no lunch) and now in Germany we sampled the hotels local cuisine and what a delight it was - Codon Blue, unlimited salad and of course a German beer !

Tomorrow we continue further along the Moselle hoping to catch up with Melbourne friends Paul & Barb who have been enduring Europe on motorcycle in the same wet conditions.

  1. Testing Testing Testing!

Mike, look after the old bloke. Ear infections are not good. Tell him that he's got to drink plenty of beer. Beer fixes everything
